week 8

Nanotechnology is something that we are just getting the grasp of. As a science community we are beginning to understand the vastness of this field. Scientist and Artist are both figuring out that when they combine the two the possibilities to advance their field is endless. They have started to venture into the idea of capturing images at the microscopic level, its something that hasn't crossed peoples minds until recently. Going even further then just capturing images Scientist have started to go one step further. They have built devices to help them build things at the nano level, using their mind and body movements as a way to control it. Although the advancements in this specific field of art and science seem relatively endless there are some factors that put some limits. The amount of money and tools that are needed are one of the factors that create a border. Once we become more advanced the need for certain jobs soon become replaced with the technology we created using this specific combination of art and science. This loss of jobs can harm our economy tremendously. Although the science part of nanotechnology may seem limited the art aspect remains entirely unknown and full of possibilities. Nano Art will continue to evolve and will be highlighted by the addition of science as it evolves and intertwines itself into the art community.

week 7

This weeks lectures and readings are very similar to the study of psychology. This week we have integrated the fascinating aspects of the human mind with a more artistical view on it. The mind is made up of cortexes and lobes that each control a different part or function in our lives. The readings have connected the functions of the brain with certain artists styles and how they develop a certain image that they are known for. For example in music some musicians, usually the phenomenal ones, have some kind or form of mental disorder. These musicians are gifted naturally but it can almost be argued that their gift is escalated and they interpret things differently, which gives their music are different sound. So the same goes for artists and their paintings or artwork. They interpret life differently due to a complication in their frontal lobes or their cortex. They can feel things much stronger influencing their paintings to be more extreme or abstract. The connection between neurology and the mind with art and its creativity is something that goes hand in hand. As our knowledge of the entirety of what the mind and its connection with the body can do the more we can expand and broaden our definition and interpretation of art.

BioArt is an important part of the scientific and art community. BioArt highlights the key factors that have been overlooked in our society, such as social issues and it helps address the void that is left between art and science. BioArt exemplifies a different kind of beauty within the art society, such as the different displays of living art. They're made of objects that have been biochemically made to show that eventually all things die. These displays of art can be a physical art display or a gene modification within food. Both of these although one more identifiable then the other are forms of art. Although we believe that art is something that we can physically see it can be as much as changing a gene to modify the outcome of a baby between two parents. And as much as making a modification in a seed to make the plant grow bigger and produce more. BioArt has so many different variations of examples that it can bridge the gap between the arts and the scientific advancements. Combining both of these two communities is something that could farther both and enhance them into their full potential, creating art and scientific inventions that we have never seen or even thought of before.

Week 3

Robots have been something that have been used in our society as early as the Chinese civilizations printing press. Although its not the image of a robot that we have in our head its one of its earliest forms. In Chinese civilization the printing press made life so much easier and it improved the speed and quality. In our present day society we envision robots more as something that can help us in our every day lives and can take and interpret instruction. A perfect example of this is in the movie Big Hero 6. Baymax, the robot that was originally designed by its creator as a health care robot started to learn and develop feelings throughout the entire movie. This robot is an example of what is currently the biggest obstacle in robotics, developing feelings and appropriate emotions. In a 2009 TedTalk this topic was discussed, they had come up with  a software that was able to identify the emotion that someone was expressing and the robot was able to reciprocate the same emotion. As art and robotics continue to become more intertwined they will continue to develop this software to eventually be able to reciprocate the proper emotion.

Week 1: Two cultures

The divide between the two culture that C.P Snow talks about was caused because of how we defined the term science. These two cultures have grown apart and continue to be separated. On campus at UCLA theres the obvious north and south campus comparison but theres also the separation between the athlete and non athlete culture. Most athletes aren't science majors mostly because we have full and exhausting days, but its assumed that athletes don't venture to south campus. This new theory on the two cultures has made me more aware of how divided and separated we make things. And the assumptions that belong with each culture may not be entirely true. Having this information allows me to view things differently, to not make assumptions but instead try and experience the culture and form my own, a culture that isn't all north campus or south campus one that could be bits and pieces from both. Brockton talks about being able to identify the third culture that does exist, the contemporary scientists. Although their could be other "middlemen" that can connect the two sides of campus. Even though both sides of campus are vastly different they still give much respect to the individuals who excel in one of the two campuses.
